Pyroflux 340
Sodium Free Injectable Drossing Flux for Magnesium and Other Aluminium Alloys
This is an injectable flux designed for alloys where sodium may be detrimental to either the physical characteristics or the chemistry of the alloy.
Typically, fluxes used for injection fluxing provide an “in-situ” reaction to occur between the molten metal being treated and the flux. This reaction drastically reduces the amount of flux necessary to treat the bath compared to the more conventional surface applied fluxes. In general, injectable fluxes reduce the atmospheric concerns that conventional fluxes offer because the fine chloride, or fluoride particles, released through the physical surface applications are reduced, providing for a better work environment.
Temperature Range
- The recommended temperature range is 1325–1375ºF (718–746ºC).
Methods of Use
- This flux can be used in any commercially available rotary degassing/flux injection system. Each operation may present different circumstances that control add rates, such as the size of vessel being treated, amount of time allocated for treatment, desired specific gravities, etc.
- When injecting flux the following items are important to monitor.
– Carrier gas pressure must be set to ensure good dispersal but not so high that the surface of the vessel is radically disturbed, as this defeats the degassing process.
– Rotor speed is important; too high of a speed will create a vortex at the metal/shaft interface, introducing all the dross back into the bath.
– Gas bubble distribution should slow in a myriad of tiny bubbles. Ideally, the surface of the metal should resemble a glass of champagne.
– Purge time after completion of the injection cycle should always be sufficient to allow complete transfer of all flux particles from the flux line to the bath.
Physical Properties and Blend Variations
- Pyrofluxand potassium silicofluoride.
- It has the addition of potassium sulfate to support higher temperature applications. It allows the flux to fire in alloys pouring at higher temperatures.
