Pyroflux 315

Mildly Exothermic Injectable Drossing flux for Magnesium and other Aluminium Alloys

This is a mildly exothermic flux for use in drossing practices or injection units where the charge is comprised of returns and scrap, as well as new ingot or sow.

When used on a regular basis it will aid in the prevention of wall buildup in reverberatory furnaces by “sweating out” the occluded metallics that are inherent in most wall buildup. This greatly reduces the amount of time and effort required to clean the walls due to the voids created by the “sweating out” process. It also performs well in charging and skimming wells and transfer ladles. For optimum performance, this flux must come in contact with the dross to take advantage of its exothermic properties, allowing reaction with "wet" dross for release the free metallics, separating metal from the dross to precipitate removal resulting in a dry dross.

Temperature Range

  • Usage optimizes at temperature ranges of 1325ºF (718ºC) and higher.

Flux Features

  • When injecting the flux, ensure that the purge time after each application is sufficient to ensure that all the flux has been brought to the surface.
  • Add flux at the rate of ¼ inch (6 mm) across the entire surface of the metal.
  • As the flux is worked into the dross, it will turn a dark cherry red indicating enough flux has been applied. Whitish dross indicates too much flux has been applied.
  • When rabbling the dross, exercise caution not to re-wet the dross through excessive splashing or vigorous raking.
  • Allow the skimmer to drain completely before discarding the dross into its container.

Physical Properties and Product Blend

  • Pyroflux 315 is a beige-white powder flux containing sodium chloride, potassium chloride, sodium carbonate, calcium fluoride and sodium silicofluoride.
  • This flux contains the addition of sodium carbonate to assist in producing a dry dross.

Quality castings begin with proper fluxing practices. Contact your Pyrotek Sales Engineer to determine the appropriate flux for your operation. 866-Pyrotek (866-797-6835)
