Pyroflux 375

Drossing Flux for Aluminium Alloys During Continuous Charge of Chips

This flux is designed for melting where there is a continuous charge of chips in the furnace well.  It can be used with vortex systems as well as a “puddler” or mechanical mixing units or systems, or those with just circulating pumps.

Advantages over conventional fluxes for this type of charge material is that the customer uses far less flux, eliminating the messy, harmful buildup on walls of the wells normally associated with more fluid type fluxes. Its greatest advantage is that the operator will not have to skim the furnace nearly as often as when using a “wet” flux.

Temperature Range

  • The recommended temperature range is 1325–1375ºF (718–746ºC).

Flux Features

  • Should be added to a freshly skimmed well at the rate of ¼–½ inch (6–12 mm) of flux over the well's entire surface.
  • Allow charge material to be worked through the flux layer until it appears to be spent.
  • The more the flux is worked or rabbled, the better it will release free metallics.
  • Furnaces with “puddler” systems should check the condition of the well a couple of times per shift to see there isn’t too much material in the well. It may be advantageous to skim the well more than once per shift depending upon the amount of material charged.
  • In wells that are not mechanically worked, the dross should be worked every half-hour to ensure that the free metallics are allowed to coalesce and return to the bath.
  • In furnaces using a vortex system, the operator must ensure that the RPM’s are not so fast that flux is dragged into the main hearth of the furnace. Smoking may occur and cause environmental problems.

Physical Properties and Product Blend

  • Pyroflux 375 is a white powder flux containing sodium chloride, potassium chloride and potassium silicofluoride.
